Walking around the streets of the financial district in San Francisco, nothing makes me cringe more than seeing a decently dressed guy screwing it all up with awful shoes. I hear cries of ‘oh, but they are comfortable’, ‘they are dressy because they are black/dark’, ‘I have high arches’, and the selfless: ‘I don’t care about stuff like that’. Poppycock! Otherwise you wouldn’t be wearing that suit. Nothing screams I’ve just stopped trying more than bad shoes, take it from Ryan Gosling.
Girls wrestle with strappy high heels, foot mangling pumps, and ankle breaking stilettos for fashion, yet guys can’t be bothered to pair their suits with something other than a fake-leather-wrapped walking shoe. This isn’t a lesson in pain, and to be perfectly honest my dress shoes are just as comfortable as my running shoes, rather it’s a matter of overall appearance.
Just about any stylish person will tell you, it’s all in the details- and guess what, your shoes are a HUGE detail, so mind the gap. Every man should have at least one pair of nice leather dress shoes, period. You can find them for the same price of your fancy Nike’s and if you take care of them, they will take care of you and only get better with time.
With style for every man’s taste, there is a wide world of classic dress shoes. Each of these shoe styles deserves its own study, so for a more in-depth feature on each, you can click the corresponding link. I’ll be adding a new one every few weeks, so check back or leave a comment about your favorite.
